Scientists have developed a radically different treatment for children with language and reading difficulties.  They call it "glasses for the ears."

 

Fast ForWORD® LANGUAGE Program Goals: Maps the brain to improve the fundamental cognitive skills of memory, attention, processing, and sequencing, while simultaneously improving reading and learning skills.  This software is an essential first step in developing these critically important prerequisites for successful reading.  Fast ForWORD® Language software develops the cognitive skills that give struggling readers the solid foundation they need to learn to read.  These skills are developed in the context of key language and reading skills including: Listening Accuracy - Phonological Awareness - Language Structures.

Behavior Indicators:

  • Misunderstands what is said to them
  • Needs to have oral instructions repeated
  • Has difficulty identifying initial or last sounds of a word or segmenting a word into syllables

Fast ForWORD® Language to Reading
Program Goals: To develop an understanding of the oral language skills and to begin developing more advanced skills for reading. The program uses a "cross-training" approach to teaching reading skills. The exercises integrate skills necessary for improving listening, thinking, and reading skills. The program begins focusing on decoding skills, sound-letter recognition, awareness of grammar, syntax and meaning, as well as visual-word recognition.

Behavior Indicators:

  • Having difficulty comprehending what is read
  • Is reading below grade level
  • Has difficulty following oral directions
  • Has little interest in reading




Fast ForWORD® to Literacy  Middle and High School
Program Goals: To improve reading skills and communication skills in adolescents and adults. This program makes a connection between language and reading skills while concentrating on "cross-training" the brain in skills such as phonological awareness, working memory, language comprehension, and sustained, focused attention. Fast ForWORD® to Literacy Middle and High School also helps to improve critical reading skills.

Behavior Indicators:

  • Misunderstands what is being said to them in conversation
  • Has trouble following written or oral directions
  • Has difficulty with reading comprehension
  • Has difficulty identifying beginning and final sounds in words

Testing is Also Available to identify a base line

or adults and children to determine the specific programs:

  • When reading and spelling are difficult
  • When comprehending is difficult
  • When math is difficult
  • A two or three-hour diagnostic session will be scheduled to administer a battery of standardized tests to assess the strengths and weaknesses in an individual's ability to read, spell, and comprehend language. A math assessment will be done as well.

A consultation will be scheduled to review assessments, assessment completed by the school, an educator, a psychologist or an assessment prepared by New Heights Center.  Recommendations, specific to the individual prospective client, will be presented at that time for consideration.

New Heights Center also offers training sessions in the Lindamood-Bell Processes®.  Training is scheduled upon request - if you have a group of six or more teachers, parents, speech/language pathologists or other interested adults, call the center to discuss scheduling a training.
